Jenny, our Virtual Assistant from the Philippines, resigned earlier this month. We will truly miss having Jenny on board and we thank her for her dedicated support over the past year.

We have recruited two new Virtual Assistants from GP Hero who are in training to provide the best possible support to patients. Welcome to Marielle and Hans!

Marielle is a dedicated Virtual Assistant with a passion for delivering exceptional support. Outside of work, Marielle enjoys time with family and is an avid sports enthusiast.

Hans is an approachable Virtual Assistant with a degree in management. Happily married with two wonderful kids, Hans cherishes quality time with family and has a passion for cinema.

R U OK? focuses on building the confidence and skills of the help-giver - the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life.

As the weather starts to warm up here in Melbourne, the so-called hayfever capital of the world, we're reminding patients to discuss their allergies and/or asthma with their GP to ensure they're taking appropriate safety and preventative measures.

🏥 Discussing your allergies with a health professional is important to ensure correct diagnosis and effective ongoing management. Reviewing your allergy or asthma plan might help you prepare for the spring season, enabling you to respond more confidently in the event of worsening symptoms.

In the meantime, remember to:
🥀 Stay indoors when the pollen count is high if possible
⛈️ Check the thunderstorm asthma forecast on VicEmergency
💊 Carry any prescribed medications
💬 Follow your doctor's advice and take all recommended precautions

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month.

Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Australian men.

In Australia, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85. About 3,000 of our dads, brothers, husbands, sons and mates will lose their battle every year.

Early detection and treatment can significantly improve prostate cancer outcomes.

Symptoms of prostate cancer include:
- Frequent urination
- Urgent and sudden need to urinate
- Difficulty in urinating
- Weaker than normal stream
- Painful ejaculation
- Blood in urine or semen
- Erectile dysfunction

This September, let's look out for our loved ones and spread awareness of prostate cancer together.

Do you suffer from osteoporosis or weak bones? If so, preventing trips and falls should be a top priority!

The likelihood of a fall increases as we age, partly because of the natural changes that happen as our bodies age. In fact, 30% of adults aged 65 and over fall annually, with 6% suffering injuries as a result.

To reduce your risk of falls:

👁️ Speak to your doctor about any vision problems, foot pain, or dizziness, and ask if you can adjust any medications that cause the above side-effects

🍎 Maintain a healthy diet to ensure strong bones and muscles

💪 Stay physically active

💡 Fall-proof your home by removing tripping hazards and installing handrails and efficient lighting

🚶 Consider using walking aids, including a stick or frame

🏋️ Consider seeing a physiotherapist to help improve your balance and exercise regime

Every year on 1 September, the Australian Thyroid

Every year on 1 September, the Australian Thyroid Foundation’s Gold Bow Day raises awareness of thyroid cancer. The annual event encourages Australians to be aware of symptoms and changes to their thyroid gland. The bow symbolises the thyroid gland’s shape, while the gold colour represents its importance.

Please don’t ignore any physical changes to your thyroid gland or any symptoms that may be related to changes in your thyroid function.

Symptoms to look out for include:
— Your thyroid gland has enlarged or become painful
— You can feel or see any lumps on your thyroid gland
— You have developed a persistent cough, or you constantly clear your throat
— Your voice has changed in volume or has become hoarse
— You have trouble swallowing or sleeping due to discomfort in your throat
— Your thyroid function blood results have changed, resulting in hypo or hyper thyroid symptoms
